Reflecting on Editing + Sound 

Our aim in todays lesson was to roughly see where we would put our sound in of news reporting, police sirens and radio. We wanted the sound to over lap each other as though it is a case of breaking news, and to give the audience a sense of what it could mean about the film.

We only roughly put the sound on certain scenes where we think suit well, however we still need to film the beginning of the film to see if we could also put that type of sound there to or not. My group and I think where we have put the sound for not works quite well, maybe needs a few more re-touches after filming the beginning scenes. For next lesson Wednesday 9th December we will be filming in Hampstead Heath and to hopeful editing some more on the thursday 10th December.

Reflection on Editing-

Today was our first time editing what we had filmed last lessons. Our aim was to edited roughly of how we wanted the scenes at the end of our storyboard to look like, where they fitted better and how they looked all together with the uses of jump cuts for a fast pace tempo, also to record some news reporting as sound for certain scenes.

My group and I think the shots work really well together as I am using jump cuts to create that fast pace, also going back and forth to of the same shot with different shots between them to create a discontinues feelings as the character is getting things ready. We also started (a scrip) to record news reporting and police radio for the scenes as sound to link parts together over lapping each other as though it is breaking news.

Reflection - First Footage

Today was our first filming day which can also be seen in our production schedule. Our aim today was to film the last scenes in our storyboard which included the filming of the tools and important props that could justify the personality of the character. The props we used were: rope, scissors, tape, posters, paper, stapler, plasters, bandages, folder, post-it notes and a pen. 

As a group, we think the filming today went quite well as the angles we had chosen in our storyboard looked much more effective in action which is something that worked very well. Whilst filming, we thought of additional ideas to film and use in our title sequence which relates to the other scenes. A final thing that went well was the fact that our group was all very cooperative and everyone had a part to contribute and share their opinion.

Our last filming session was in Hampstead Heath to capture the first part of our storyboard of a dead young man and what is around him that associates with his part and the second half of our storyboard.   

My group and I think the shots with have gathered together worked really well such as close ups of the actors face and parts of his body to indicate an un easy atmosphere. We experimented using different camera angles for the same scene in order to find which on worked best for our film.

We had a few difficulties in getting there on time and also having enough time to shoot everything however we overcome them and got every shot done, however might have to reshoot some scenes after the half-term if needed.

In this screen shot is an improved version of our prezi as we have corrected our spelling mistakes and added more information in this particular question regarding the topic. We have also added images to make the prezi look more interesting and eye catching.

• Theft - stolen if equipment is left on its own - Make sure everyone in the group has an assigned equipment to look after.
• Damaged - If you have dropped it, haven't set the equipment up right - Make sure the equipment is set up properly and is in the right place.
• Using sharp objects - Will being using a razor for some scene so will have to be careful when using it also while being around others.
• Falling over objects - Tripping over equipment or anything that is in the way- Make sure anything that could get in the way is out of the way.

Task 8 - Sound Design

Part One:

• What diegetic and non-diegetic sound do you intend to use and why?

Diegetic - For this we have intended to use foley sound in a diegetic sound form where both the character(s) and the audience can hear every detail in sound as it's happening. For example, we have decided to use diegetic sound of footsteps and the snapping of twigs sounds to emphasise the woods scene and set the tone for the film as it will also set the genre because it may seem quite eerie as well because we don't know who is walking and we want to just find out. Another type of diegetic sound we intend to use is the sound of the blood dripping from someone's hand. This again, will be portrayed in a foley way as it will be emphasised but it will go under diegetic sound because the characters can also hear this. Finally, for diegetic sound we have also decided to let the character also hear the sound of the use of tools. For example, during the title sequence as the tools are being used and they're making their own natural sounds this will be heard to the audience as well as the characters - and will probably be emphasised to create a foley effect. We have already created one of our sounds which can be heard below:

Non-diegetic - For this we have intended to use a backing musical score to fit in with the scene and potentially set it. This piece of music will be used all throughout the title sequence but its volume will go up at certain points in the title sequence and down at certain points. The score is quite a low bass piece of musical score which we thought would be quite well and fit in with our title sequence because of the genre of our film and the eeriness in the musical score. This can be listened to below from the beginning to 1:00. We also found that the echoing sounds mixed with the pauses in the piece of music can be very effective and very much attributed with our title sequence.



We have also decided to use just one more non-diegetic sound and that is of a news report sound of a missing person which will be linked with the mystery person laying on the floor. This will, again, create tension and uneasiness within the scene and reflect upon the audience which will mean that we have potentially did a good job with portraying the genre to them. 

Part Two:
A rough soundscape that we have designed for our title sequence isn't put together yet exactly but we have bits from our recorded sounds that we will use within the soundscape. The sounds can be listened to below:




We have made these sounds from objects in our surroundings and have made different sound effects for which we can use in our title sequence. The first sound can be used as the sound of thunder as this is generally a film cliche when something bad is about to happen, we can either use this is a suspending disbelief/false plato or actually use the sound and bring something up. The footsteps, as mentioned before can be used to emphasise the fact that someone is walking towards the audience to create more effect. The fourth sound is the sound of a zip and can be used to emphasise the sound of the zipping of the body bag.

Part Three:

• Which title sequences have influenced with your sound design?

The main title sequence which has influenced us with our sound design is like always, Se7en, this is because the emphasis of the sounds of the tools were very effective and as a group we thought we could also use something similar to create the same effect. Other title sequences which have influenced us with our sound design is the sound design of the film, The Ring. This is because the title sequence involves a mix of foley sound right at the beginning with the emphasis on the sound of the water dripping and the main girl stepping into a pool of water. In addition, throughout the title sequence there is the use of a musical score in the background which is also where we got our inspiration to use a musical score all throughout our title sequence.

Part 3:

• What other aspects of mise-en-scene have you planned for? 

Another aspect of mise-en-scene which we have planned for is the makeup. For the makeup we have decided to use quite dead-like makeup. This means that the character who will be playing the character laying on the floor will have quite a powdery, white and sunken eyes kind of makeup to emphasise the state in which the character is at, whether this is because they are freezing cold from the outside or whether they're dead.

Part 1:

• Which props do you intend to use and why? - with the use of evidence

These are pretty much all the props we will be using in our title sequence. As we were planning our title sequence and came to the conclusion of the final idea of our title sequence we found that we will not be using a lot of props due to the fact that we want to really keep our title sequence discrete and therefore, keep the use of props quite minimal. 

We intend to use a missing person's poster which has been published in a newspaper - hence the scrunched up newspaper on the floor as this clearly shows what we were initially planning to do. We will use these props as having the missing person's poster in the newspaper and the newspaper on the floor - presumably stepped on. 

We also intend to use a torch hence the picture of the flashlight of a torch used in the photo collage. We want to use this because we will be using the location of a forest/woods for our title sequence and due to the fact that we want to film when it is quite dark we want to use the torch for both our benefit so we can see what's on the floor and where we're going etc but also so it can create effect and tension in the title sequence.

Task 33 - Branding our Blog

Blog Theme

We chose this template as our background theme to represent our blog and the theme of our title sequence - thriller. We thought this template, which is under the "travel" category, would be very effective for our blog as it looks like an abandoned house which is quite dirty and has a grungy atmosphere. The house in the template also reminisces a haunted house which is an idea for one of our mise-en-scene aspects of location of where to film parts of our title sequence.

Task 31 - Final Idea

These images are ideas we are planning to use in our own title sequence. This shot shows the fade from the title credit using the director's name to the camera movement which shows us an aspect of the mise-en-scene which is the location - a bedroom. We believe this is very effective as the title sequence goes on the camera moves accordingly which is something we think we could use to a good standard in our own title sequence. 

This screenshot we took of the title sequence of the thriller/horror movie 'Insidious' is something we thought we could use in our own title sequence. The shot shows a character laying on a bed which is something along the lines of what we want to do in our title sequence - however, just with the difference of someone laying on the ground, presumably dead, instead. 

Another film we got our inspiration for our title sequence from is the movie 'Seven' as its title sequence is very different and in the format of a 'film before a film'. The shots we have decided to use from this title sequence is the metallic tools used as seen as in the picture of a screenshot from the movie.

We thought to include the use of a ouija board in our title sequence as this may create a sense of tension and create the feeling of eeriness amongst the audience which will convey that we would have achieved our aim of doing this as we are making a title sequence of the genre thriller and the creepier and eerier it is for the best audience the better - obviously, without giving too much away in it about the film. 

Feedback:

in a forest/woods, shot the setting and then we see a small section of the body on the ground with a slight blood, the camera would be the second character who walks over the body. We hear news reports during the time we see the body and flash backs of screaming.We see the feet of the character which plays around with the death body's hand. Finish off by seeing the character behind the camera walking off and ending with a silent view of the scenery, just like the way it started with shots of the woods/forest with no sound. 

Task 30- ideas of props

The knife could be used in the sequence as our genre is thriller which involves death,murder and violence, which relates to the prop of a knife.

The touch is another item that could be used as it could allow someone to escape from a trapped area or from darkness which relates to the theme of danger and the genre thriller.

The journal gives an mysterious theme to the sequence and allows the audience to be more interested and excited to see what comes up left. An example is from se7en which had journals, books and old written papers which gives a scary look to the whole sequence,

Micro analyse of favourite film

Incidious

Camera:

Most shots are taken as a wide shot but however key parts are medium close ups as in the sequence.  There is a lot of panning in the sequence as there is a sense of false pisibo, where the audience is assuming that something ever scary or important but it turns out to be something ordinary, which excites the audience and gives them some sort of thrill. It feels like the camera is taking us on a journey as we are walking with the camera which puts the audience in confusion  and they're in a mystery, waiting in excitement to see what happens.

Editing- the font used in the sequence seems like it's been written by chalk, which gives a sense that it is handwriting as if the characters have written it down. The name of the characters has been presented in the colour red which could represent the genre of the film as red symbolises blood and death. Also the screen was black at some time which could have a meaning behind it.it feels Like the sequence is a film before film, giving the audience different interpretations. The name of the film is written in blood which informs the audience that there is a sense of murder.

Sound- there is a use of sinister music and silence which gives a feeling of tension and fear to he audience.

Mise-en-scene:
The setting is presented in the sequence where a dark room is shown with the camera panning from the beginning of the room and having a walk around the house. The protagonist is introduced so the audience gets to see and have a sense of the film.  The props used in the sequence is the items used in the room and at the end we get to see a candle which shows that there is some sort of light or positivity in the film.

task 24- blog your own individual idea for a title sequence

genre: thriller

in my own title sequence i want to be able to engage the audience from the very start i want them to raise questions in their head so they can carry on and want to watch the rest of the film to get answers. my genre is going to be thriller and as a group we decided to use both moving images and titles for our opening sequence however we are not going to show whats going on clearly similarly in se7ens title sequence we want to engage the audience this way. se7en had a big impact on our decision for our own title sequence because it a film within a film and it raises so many questions and recant clearly see whats going on and we want ours to be similar we take se7en into mind when making our decision for our own title sequence. 

storyline:

the storyline for our film is a mystery murderer, missing people, weird things happening detectives etc. similarly to se7en i would show still images of what would happen in the film or what characters are involved because this caught my attention in se7ens opening sequence and i believe that it would catch the attention of other audiences as well.

se7en opening tittle 

the title sequence that i like is se7en not only because i did a remake of it but also because it is interesting and engaging, it keeps the audience engaged and curious it raises questions for the audience which makes them want answers so they want to watch more of the film. there is a sense of story in this title sequence it is telling and showing us something it is a film before the film. se7ens title sequence is like a short film in itself. the close ups of gruesome images and dirty and bloodied hands creates an atmosphere of tension the ages and close ups make the audience feel as if they are there themselves, we cannot see the persons face but we can see what he is doing, this makes the audience curious on who the person behind all these things are we know that the person is a psychopathic murderer but who is it. these questions are waiting to be answered so the opening sequence is big role for this film as it engages the audience right from the start they or on the edge of there seats.

skyfall opening title

sky falls opening title sequence is also very engaging as it is animated and makes the audience experience a journey. the opening sequence starts off with the main character falling into the sea so we think he is injured or dead then background music plays and he is being pulled down by a giant hand (as seen in the image below) this opening title sequence is effective because it suspending disbelief we know that a giant hand isn't really dragging him down but because it looks so realistic we believe it. the background music also matches the movement of james bond sinking. we can see bond dissapearing into a hole that we dint now where it leads to. overall i like this title sequence because it seems realistic and is very different from he other james bond title sequences.

task 21 practical remake activity evaluation

i think that our remake of the opening title sequence for se7en went extremely well and although we didn't have all the props that we needed we did really well in making a shot for shot remake, we couldn't finish off the whole of the title sequence because there was so much to do and se7en time sequence isn't a very simple task to do so although we had some of these issues i think that our final product is extremely good and looks very similar because f the detail that we put into it. 

which skills were you good at and which were you having problems with?

i enjoyed editing our version of se7en but we found it difficult to choose fonts and animations to match the exact same as the original title sequence itself, i was good at acting of the title sequence as i had to match my hand movements in time with the original ones overall i think that this was a difficult but not impossible task. 

which aspects of the film do you think went well and which wireless successful?

i think that filming the sequence went really well as we watch the scene and analysed it inch by inch to make it look the same took our time to make it look more professional, i also think that editing went well although we struggled a but we finally found the fonts and animation that we wanted to use in our sequence to make it look the same as the original thing.
the things that we struggled with is fully completing the filming stage we didn't have enough time to film the whole of the complicated se7en opening sequence but we had to work with what we had 

what changes would you make if you were to do the project again?

id probably plan it better so i could complete more of the filming an make the sequence longer because our sequence was very short compared to the original, id like to take part in more of the recording and editing not just acting.

why is sound important


sound is really important because it is 50% of the film its used in the film to establish atmosphere, tone, it also helps to identify the genre of the film. sound gives the film realism and engages the audience as it makes it sound realistic ands an atmosphere to it. for example in some horror movies there is silence as it makes the scene more dramatic and then unexpectedly out of nowhere something or someone pops up and frightens the audience, therefore sound is very important in film as it is needed to make a film dramatic and bring it to life. there are two types of sound in the film world diegetic sound and non-diegetic sound; diegetic sound is sounds that the character can hear and non-diegetic is sounds that the audience can hear but not the characters themselves such as background music, only the audience can hear the background music as it is not on screen. both non and diegetic sounds a important n film as it brings the film to life and make it a better film to watch it makes the audience have emotions.





from this scene in cabin in the woods non diegetic sound (background music, instruments) is used to create a atmosphere of tension it makes the hairs of the audience go up they feel as if they are part of the film without the background music this scene wouldn't be as frightening.

what is suspending disbelief? it is when you know that what you're watching in the film isn't real however it makes you believe that it is real so you can be engaged into the film 

what is soundscape? sound scape is everything that you hear when watching the film. A soundscape is a sound or combination of sounds that forms or arises from an immersive environment.

se7en

One of the most influential film openings for me is SE7EN. Firstly this is because it is the genre that we decided to do as a group for our own title sequence, adding on to that it includes the key features needed for a thriller opening credits, such as the sinister sound and unusual sound effects /background noise. Also the shots and camera angles sum up the whole title sequence as the close ups and low/high angles all have a meaning behind it. We also as a group did a shot to shot remark of Se7en so we liked thee ideas and the props used in the sequence, such as the razor used and journals. What also makes this title sequence influential is that its a film before a film, as there is a sense of a story being told before the actual film in the sequence. It gives the audience a sense of suspending disbelief as they know the character and the things that's happening is not really life but they insist on believing its real people and true stories.
