importance of sound

Importance of sound in film
Sound in film is used to create tone, atmosphere and give hints to what the storyline and genre might be. Sound also creates realism and heightens the experience for viewers. Sound has been said to be 50% of the film and a film wouldn't be half as good as it should be if t weren't for sound. With the development of sound throughout the years, sound now makes the film 3 dimensional visceral that makes the film enjoyable to hear as much as watch.

soundscape- Everything you hear ( the range)
 sound design-Deliberate preparation of sound for a particular effect
 suspending disbelief-Process of knowing its not real but want to believe its real. (common in scary and paranormal movies)
Sound term definitions:

Ambient Sound: Background sound, the sound pressure level at given locations..

Diegetic: Sound hose source is visible on screen or whose source is implied to be present by the actions of the film.

Non-diegetic: Sound whose source is neither visible on screen nor has been implied to be present in the action.

Score: Music that does not include singing.

Song: Music that does include singing. 

Voice Over: When you can hear the speaking but cant see who is speaking.

Dialogue: Two people speaking to each other.

Foley: Sound in real life, its not added in after recorded.

Synchronous: Sound that matches the certain movement shown on screen.

Asynchronous: Sound that matches the action being performed however it is not precisely synchronised with the action. 

Sound Bridge: When the score begins and it is carried over to another scene, connecting the two together to show a link.

Sound Motif: Sound effects or combination of sound effects that are associated with a particular character, setting, situation or idea from the film.

 

when there is sound In a film, it gives the film meaning and illustrates the genre of the film. The sound of the film allows the film to be more interesting and keeps the audience more elucidated and intrigued to the film.

 

 

 

when there is no sound in a film, the genre of the film is very hard to figure out as the ideas of the film is very vague. It also makes the film boring as in a way the images would not add up
