task 10- introduction to genre

what is genre?

genre is a specific type of film, music or writing. genres are used to categorise films there are many film genres such as thriller comedy drama etc. there could also be more than one genre in a film these could be classed as hybrid genres such as thriller-comedy or romance-comedy these hybrid genres occur when two genres mix together.

My genre preference: Taken (Taken1)  

looking at the poster used to advertise the film we can see that this film is going
to be an action film from the use of the gun in the actors hand. from this cover i
identify the film to be action and thriller through the use of the weapons and
from the use of the writing to convey the actors speech, it seems like a threat
which also portrays this to be a thriller and action film. We can also see that the main character of the film in this image it portrays what the role of the character is going to be because we can see what he is saying (a threat) and the weapon he's holding. the genre of the film is easily identifiable by anyone even if they haven't seen this movie, i have seen this movie many times because it is one of my favourites ad if i look at this cover for the film from someone else perspective i can still identify its genre because it is clear to the audience.

The great thing about this film is that it is a mystery like film and we can tell that the main character is going to win and that the bad or evil people as some may say  is going to lose, it is easily predicted when you watch the film because the main character sets himself on a mission to save his daughter and he would risk his own life and others lives to save her no matter what it takes. You are kept on your toes throughout the whole of the film there are many suppression moments that would create an adrenaline rush into anyone that what makes this such a great film.

similar genres to this film that i also like are the rest of the taken movies (taken2 and 3) and also john wick.


genre preference 2: iron man 3 sci-fi and action 

from this advertisement for this film we can easily identify the genre from the main characters weird suit we can identify it as a sci-fi genre from this advanced technological suit used by the main character, we can also see that this is a action film because of the weaponised suit and also that the character has marks on his face which can show that he's been in some sort of conflict.
from the scene shot that i have taken from a scene in the movie we can see the action part of the film because there is a fight/conflict between two characters it shows a fight between a human with superhuman abilities fighting iron man aka tony stark. this film shows the struggle of tiny star who is having psychological events because of what he has experienced he is trying to overcome these problems and save the person he loves. The film keeps you interested from beginning to start it makes you believe that such things exist.

the conventions i like about this genre is that it makes the audience believe that such things are possible or can be done such as making or being iron man. the film uses a location known to many because it is a mega city (new york) and many of the audience can relate and feel like they are part of the film, the film is made for many age groups as many different people would enjoy such a great film , the film has some comedy inside which keeps the audience interested, the technologically advanced object in the film maze the audience of how a human being can invent and use such things.

similar films to this genre are the other marvel films such as the rest of the iron man series and thor etc.

genre preference 3 hangover

from this cover the genre is easily identifiable by most people to be a comedy genre because we can see that a baby is wearing glasses which is very humorous to every one we can also see a character with a missing tooth and it seems as if he has no clue of how he has lost it. this film is very popular as it it quite different from other comedy films, it has a group of friends which are involved in a bachelor party for the groom and they do not know what has happened to them over night and they have also lost the groom so the try to remember piece by piece to find him. this film has some similarities to other comedy films however i think that the hangover series are very different and original in my opinion.

the film keeps he audience interested from beginning to start as it makes the audience feel engaged and laugh from beginning to end every scene creates laughter for the audience, this is a great film to watch when you're miserable as it has conventions that not many comedy films have its something different thats why it is so successful.
