Watching documentary

What does Thomas Sutcliffe mean when he says " Films need to seduce their audience into long term commitment. while there are many types of seduction, the temptation to go for instant arousal is almost irresistible"

Thomas Sutcliffe suggests that in the beginning of the film there needs to excitement and needs to keep the audience on edge but it is a struggle to not show all  the excitement and action from the film right at the beginning and Title sequence

According to director Jean Jacques Beineix, What are the risks of 'instant arousal'

There is a lot pressure for the film to have instigation as the audience has to be assume the film is going to be more interesting and allow the audience to have expectations as the film goes on

Explain why " a good beginning must make the audience feel that it doesn't know nearly enough yet, and at the same time make sure that it doesn't know too little"

For a good beginning the audience needs to know and see the best bits in the smallest manner so they  have the buzz to want to watch the film. Also the beginning needs to have the certain information about the film so the audience doesn't feel clueless and have the titillation to know what best bits is going to end with and what kind of resolution the film is going to come up with. However the audience should not know a lot about the film as it bore the audience as they would know what is going to happen next. Also they would not be able to use their imagination about the film and will know the expectations.
What does critic Stanley Kauffmann describe as the classic opening? Why does this work?

Stanley Kauffmann elucidates an establishing shot of New york city from the East, leading on is then a close up of  building which we can clearly see the details. The camera moves up the building and goes to a close up of the window. This here is a classic opening works as it tells us where the film is set and tells us the occupation of the ' Hero'

Why is Kyle cooper's title sequence to the film Seven so effective?

Kyle cooper's title sequence is effective as it gives a hint of how the  genre and theme of the film is going to be and prepares the audience for what they are about to watch. The props used in the title sequence makes a stimulating feeling towards the audience, also the sinister music helps build the atmosphere and gives you ann idea of the things that will happen during the film. Adding on to that the opening tells a story and foreshadows the events to come in the film.
